Sears July Comparable Store Sales Increase 1.8 Percent

Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S) today announced total domestic store revenues for the four weeks ending July 29, 2000 were $2.11 billion. Comparable domestic store revenues increased 1.8 percent. Total domestic store revenues increased 3.3 percent above revenues of $2.05 billion for the four weeks ending July 31, 1999.

"We are pleased by the performance of our hardlines business and the improvements in our apparel business, which showed a slight increase for the month," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arthur C. Martinez. "Home electronics, sporting goods, lawn and garden, footwear, fine jewelry, and cosmetics and fragrances all reported strong sales increases in July. Our appliance sales, which have been strong throughout the year, were impacted by slower air conditioner sales due to dramatically cooler weather compared to unusually high temperatures last July." Martinez added that the company's specialty stores did well for the month with strong increases in Sears Hardware and Sears Auto Center stores as well as The Great Indoors stores, which opened its newest store in the Dallas area this month.
